NYC: dec 05

events :

* Sat. Dec 17th :

Hypnogoogia - Jim Drain & Ara Peterson @ Deitch
This is only a fraction of the exhibit. I forgot to take a picture of the amazing mirror kaleidoscopic vortex video sphere.

Deitch - colourful, psychedelic, mechanical and aesthetically engaging as always. There is a good interview with Jim Drain in the 49th Issue of Tokion Magazine, discussing the Rhode Island music and art community, and the aesthetic that he has in a way coined in his art.. (neons, geometry, psychedelics, scale etc..)

Tokion Magazine is a bimonthly international art, music, film, culture magazine that attempts to bridge between the American and Japanese art scenes.

The Grand St location of Deitch featured an exhibit by JD from Le Tigre - mainly photographs of herself in everyday life - as a butch lesbian bringing ideas of gay pride.

also visited:
New Museum of Contemporary Arts, Mike Kelly @ Gagosian, Bill Viola, Chelsea galleries...

Exit Art Biennial II:

Lucky Dragons :
an interactive performance using sensors that measure energy levels that are processed through a computer to create sound. every time someone touches another person holding on to the wire, the sound fluctuates. a flute and accompanying beats are played along with the sound produced.

This all took place at the ToddP holiday weekend bazar featuring art, music, djs, and La Superette art sale @ Exit Art

night : vertexList gallery in Brooklyn -opening of the Superlowrez show featuring 8-bit gameboy sets by David Kristian and Bit Shifter (Josh)as well as moving pixel display panels by invited artists

* Sun. Dec 18:

Wooden Synthesizer

- ITP (Interactive Telecommunications Program) at NYU end of year show - it's a two year graduate certificate - similar to the aims of the new and developing Computation Arts program at Concordia, but with 10 times more $$$ (imagine fully completed and functioning as well as conceptually thought out projects all the way around)

Sunn o))) w/ Growing and Nachtmystium @ North Six in Brooklyn

Nachtmystium - mediocre black metal band - fed up with the nyc hipster banter

The Growing played an amazing set and have really started to evolve, develop and experiment. In the past their performances have been slow, progressing wash of guitar noise (with lots of reverb) that build up into an epic and glorious wall of noise (which is interesting the first time around but rather banal to watch the slow and methodical build up). but this time they began playing with different sounds and quality of noises, from slightly melodic loops to washed out fuzz pulses, the toning down of reverb allows for breaks and the development of the distinct rise and fall of layering of sounds and structure which creates greater variety and interest. It's good to see their development and progression.

Sunn O))) (experimental/avant dooom on SouthernLord) the room filled up with thick dark fog and ominous red lighting. A low base tone paused and pulsated creating waves through the stunted audience. Darkness had fallen. People stood motionless, eyes closed feeling the bass tones reverberate through the body. Mysterious figures emerged on stage, lurking through the fog. The appeal of both the sound created by the Growing and Sunn o))) largely has to do with what is felt physically. With only guitar and bass, evil low tones waned. It was loud. and immersive - engulfed by sound and mystic fog. It was beautiful.
